ABSTRACT

AlM:To research the reasonability of current criteria on distant vision anddiopter for recruiting civil aviators in China. METHODS: The data about distant vision and diopter of 1901 aviators, including flight majors and aviators in active service participating in physical examination of Civil Aviation Flight University of China from 2006 to 2013, were collected. ANOVA and LSD were used to compare the differences between distant vision and diopter among different groups. The Spearman correlation coefficients of distant vision (≥0. 1 vs ≥0. 3) and diopter (0. 00 to -3. 00D) were calculated. RESULTS: The diopter of civil aviators in China increased with distant vision decreased. The correlation between distant vision and diopter ( 0. 00 to -3. 00D ) among distant vision≥0. 3's population (0. 4 CONCLUSlON: The current eye standard of recruiting civil aviators in China is reasonable to consider both distant vision and diopter, but the standard for distant vision is higher. Further research is proposed to explore the proper standard of distant vision that matches the diopter standard.

ABSTRACT

Cloward technique of cervical discectomy and fusion is a long and complex surgical procedure and instrumentation, by which complicated infection is rare in an era of routine prophylactic antimicrobial agent, especially in procedures by anterior approach. A study in the journal of Spine suggested that the incidence of unintentional laceration of the dura mater during spinal surgery might be as high as 14%.1 A majority of them are repaired intraoperatively and/or present as a spontaneous process of healing. Therefore, leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and secondary intracranial infection induced by incidental durotomy are rare. Levi et al.2 reviewed spinal instrumentation procedures in 452 cases at a single institution, finding that 17 patients got infections in the operative areas. Infection occurred after posterior spinal instrumentation procedures (7.2%) and no infection was found after anterior instrumentation procedures regardless of the vertebral levels. Likewise, Aydinli et al.3 reported that 8 patients were complicated by acute infection out of 174 patients undergoing instrumented spinal surgery, including no anterior procedures. To our knowledge, we are the first to report a complete clinical course concerning CSF leakage and secondary intracranial infection induced by Cloward technique of cervical discectomy and fusion.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo investigate neuron regeneration of aged rats after intracerebral hemorrhage(ICH).

METHODSICH model was induced by intracerebral infusion of 100microL autologous blood in adult and aged (3 and 18 m of age, respectively) male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Doublecortin(DCX), polysialylated neural cell adhesion protein(PSA-NCAM) and Bromodeoxyuridine (Brdu) in brain tissue were detected by Western blot analysis and immunohistochemical examination.

RESULTIn aged rats, DCX levels in the ipsilateral basal ganglia and subventricular zone started to increase at 7d after ICH, peaked at 14 d [(670+/-145)% of controls, P<0.01]. Most DCX positive cells in ipsilateral striatum were BrdU positive. Though DCX content in ipsilateral basal ganglia [(2560+/-758) pixels]of ICH aged rats was much higher than that of aged rat controls [(450+/-97)pixels, P<0.01], it was still lower than that in adult rats.

CONCLUSIONThe results demonstrate that neuron regeneration occurs in subventricular zone in the aged rats following intracerebral hemorrhage(ICH).

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo investigate a method for upper cicatricial ectropion correction using a rotated orbicularis oculi myocutaneous flap in the unsatisfied pre-operative construction of double eyelid.

METHODSIn construction of double eyelid, orbicularis oculi myocutaneous flap made by relaxed skin and orbicularis oculi was used to correct ectropion.

RESULTSFrom Feb. 2003 to Dec. 2005, the authors performed correction of ectropion for 13 patients. All of these patients were followed up, and the period ranged from 2 weeks to 6 months. All of these patients received good results except one. It was corrected again for the flattening of the pedicle 6 months later.

CONCLUSIONSOrbicularis oculi myocutaneous flap has a rich blood supply. The ratio of its length and width can be made to 6:1, and it can be transferred flexibly. In addition, the incision of the donor site is hidden in fold of double eyelid.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo investigate the tumor-suppression effect of hydroxyurea on meningioma cells and its possible mechanism.

METHODSThe meningioma cells were cultured in medium containing varied doses of hydroxyurea (5x10(-3)mol/L, 5x10(-4)mol/L, 5x10(-5)mol/L), the cell growth was measured by MTT method, cell apoptosis was observed with flow cytometry (FCM).

RESULTSMTT measurement demonstrated that the administration of hydroxyurea led to a dose-dependent suppression in cell proliferation and FCM showed a dose-dependent increase in apoptosis rate.

CONCLUSIONHydroxyurea can inhibit meningioma cell growth in vitro, which is most likely associated with apoptosis of the tumor cells.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the causes, consequences and management of injuries to the draining veins after embolization of brain arteriovenous malformations(BAVMs)with ?-n-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA).Methods The angiographic imaging data of 189 BAVMs patients who underwent NBCA embolization were studied retrospectively. The status of the draining veins before and after NBCA embolization was observed and compared. The intracerebral hemorrhage(ICH)complications and their relation to their angiographic features were analyzed. Results Twenty-three patients out of 189 patients showed injuries to the draining venous system, including 10 low-grade injury,6 moderate injury, and 7 high- grade injury.Six patients suffered from ICH after embolization,of whom 4 patients were due to injuries of the draining veins(2 moderate and 2 high-grade).In the 3 months follow-up evaluation of 4 patients with ICH, one died, one was in vegetative state, and the other two patients suffered from residual severe or minor (1 patient for each)permanent neurological deficits. Conclusion Our findings suggest that injury of the draining veins is the major cause of ICH and may lead to serious consequences after embolization of BAVMs with NBCA.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze the risk of embolization of brain AVMs,study the angioarchitectural factors affecting the difference of embolization level, and to establish the angioarchitecture grading system for embolization of brain AVMs.Methods The clinical data, angioarchitectural features, embolism complication and embolism level were retrospectively analyzed.Multivariate statistical analysis was performed to determine if any of the variables was predictive of a poor outcome of embolization(death or permanent neurological deficit),and if any of the variables was predictive of the percentage obliteration achieved by embolization.Based on the above results,we established the angioarchitecture grading system. Results Endovascular procedures for embolization were performed 324 times in 189 patients during an 11-year period.Embolization was performed using N-butyl cyanoacrylate. In those patients,3(1.6%) died and 5(2.6%)had a permanent neurological deficit as a result of the embolization. The AVMs were given a score from 0 to 5 based on the size, number of the first grade feeding artery, and number of the second grade feeding artery. The assigned scores were as follows:nidus size(AVF=0,
